What Is Bias Tape Used For?

Back to all articles What Is Bias Tape Used For?

Bias tape is used to finish edges, cover joins and add color details. The item determines the finish: a bib’s outer edge and a cushion seam do not need the same construction.

Clothing and accessories

In clothing, bias tape is used around necklines, armholes and the edges of uniforms or jackets. It also appears in hats, cases and backpacks. It can remain visible as binding or turn to the inside, depending on how the item is made.

Consider the shape of the edge and the thickness of the fabrics. See the single-fold and double-fold comparison for how the fold affects the finish.

Home and kitchen textiles

Aprons, tortilla warmers, towels and bibs are among the applications listed in our catalog. Binding can cover their edges and outline their shape with a matching or contrasting color.

Bias tape is also used on sheets, curtains and quilts. Before repeating a finish around the whole piece, check a sewn sample using the actual fabric.

Cushions and upholstery

Fabric-covered cord, or piping, can define the outline of a cushion. The inner cord creates a raised edge, unlike flat binding.

Our application gallery shows examples in clothing, household textiles and accessories. Use it as a visual reference for the item you are making, rather than as a specification sheet for each product.

Crafts and smaller pieces

On smaller sewing projects, binding can finish an edge while adding a decorative detail. Decide whether the edge will be visible from both sides, then choose the width and fold. Our bias tape products provide information about fabric options.
