Bias Tape for Shirts
In a shirt, bias tape can form part of an internal finish or a visible detail included in the design. Not every seam needs binding: first identify the edge to be finished.
A sample helps distinguish between covering a raw edge and adding a contrasting line. These are different construction choices, even when both use fabric tape.
Internal edges and visible details
If the pattern calls for covering an internal edge, check how the tape fits into that join. For an exterior detail, define its path and visible portion before choosing the width.
What to consider when choosing tape
Check the room available for stitching and the thickness of the join. Select material and color alongside the shirt fabric, and ask whether you need flat or folded tape.
Compare single-fold and double-fold tape.
Manufacturing for production
To repeat the finish across a production run, include the model reference and a sewn sample. Discuss packaging and tape made from your own fabric if the shirt and binding need to match.
